Abstract

Charlotte, North Carolina, which suffers from severe traffic congestion, is considering the benefits of light rail. The key light rail route would follow the right-of-way of the former Southern Railway line that extended southwest to Columbia, South Carolina, and that fell dormant in the mid-1900s. In 1998, the city allocated $16.7 million towards an upgrade of the idle section of the line, with plans to bring in a restored streetcar and, at a later date, light-rail transit. The line was completely rebuilt, with a new track realigned to enable future double tracking. The city has contracted with Siemens Transportation Systems for 16 streamlined S70 light-rail vehicles, the first of which is scheduled to arrive in January 2006.
