Abstract

This article describes the introduction and/or expansion of light rail service in Denver (CO), Charlotte (NC), Seattle (WA) and Ottawa (Canada). The experiences in these cities are very similar in that each had to overcome some initial resistance to the idea of light rail and then respond the growing demand that the service be extended. The benefits of light rail are decreased automobile congestion, revitalization of urban neighborhoods, expanded economic opportunities and greater urban accessibility for residents.
