Abstract

The article examines the status of the Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) motor carrier industry today, two decades after the deregulation of trucking in 1980. Industry-wide data is provided through year-end 1998. For some firms, 1999 data is available and will be discussed in the text. The article first examines the carriers that are still in operation from the pre-deregulation year of 1979; then the structure of the LTL industry of today is analyzed.
