Abstract
This article reviews the pricing process in the less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier industry and the multiple factors that influence pricing decisions. First, it provides some background on the freight transportation industry, contrasting the other modes to LTL, and then highlights the major legislation affecting pricing practices in the LTL industry. Next the article reviews the LTL pricing process, examines the variables to consider when assessing customers' contributions to system profits, and concludes with a recap of the current challenges facing the motor carrier industry.
