Abstract
Designing ship forms with minimum resistance is an operation which can be performed using mathematical models, but because of the practical difficulties, physical models are normally used for the investigation of hydrodynamic problems. The central theme of this paper is the bringing together of towing tank methods and computer-based information technology in the rational and automatic management of the data obtained during research carried out in a towing tank. The subject of process control is considered and applied to the evaluation of passive stabilising tanks and the direct determination of wave resistance.
