Abstract
The basic principles and components of external post-tensioning are briefly reviewed. The application of the method to some typical bridge rehabilitation situations is discussed. These situations include insufficient strength for various reasons, excessive deflection, accompanied by unacceptable cracking, and the need to increase the seismic resistance and ductility of bridge substructures. As an example from practice the rehabilitation work for the Los Chorros viaducts in Carracas, Venezuela are discussed in some detail. This rehabilitation was designed by VSL-International (Bern) and the tendons supplied by VSL France. Finally, two more current examples from practice are presented very briefly. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 850834.
