Abstract
The transportation system for the London Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 is composed of tunnels. There will be a total of six tunnel projects, three of which have been completed, with a fourth underway. The two remaining tunnel projects are Heathrow Express Extension (HexEx) and Piccadilly Line Extension (PiccEx), both of which will extend the Heathrow Express rail link to Terminal 5 from the existing station at the central terminal to an underground station within Terminal 5. Both tunnels are being constructed through London clay using Dosco open-faced TBM. In addition, both are being driven eastwards from cut and cover launch chambers. These chambers will later be capped and backfilled. There has been an emphasis on worker safety and welfare in these projects.
