Abstract

Vancouver has been a pioneer in the development of bus rapid transit (BRT). This paper describes the template used for developing BRT in Vancouver including a description of the key elements that make it unique. The paper highlights the challenges of implementing a complex project featuring new vehicles, technology, infrastructure, and a customer focused service design in an existing environment. In spite of criticisms, BRT has emerged as a useful transit mode that has a good fit in a medium-sized region such a Vancouver with a multi-centered land use pattern. The mode offers potential for growth.
