Abstract
The worldwide recognition that Curitiba, Brazil, has received for its innovative urban planning and related 'Surface Metro' bus rapid transit has induced many public officals and urban transit planners in the U.S. to begin considering bus or rubber-tired rapid transit (BRT) as a potential solution to their respective urban transportation problems. This primer gives an overview of BRT systems and defines the BRT concept, cites examples of BRT systems successfully implemented in various cities in the U.S. and worldwide, and details the benefits of BRT as the most flexible transit mode in urban settings.
