Abstract
Bus rapid transit (BRT) systems have recently become more popular spurred by Federal initiatives, the spiraling cost of rail transit, and market realities, and a growing number of cities have installed or are planning BRT. This paper presents the state of the art of BRT, the lessons learned, and implications for the future. Drawing upon ongoing research, it describes the many forms of BRT and the successes achieved to date.
