Abstract

In this extremely short article the author considers that the key to the success of high-speed rail is in the integration of parts. In particular the successful integration of a number of sectors where technical advances are continually being made such as metallurgy, electronics, information technology and telecommunications. Also characteristic of high-speed rail is integration with the rest of the network enabling easy access to town and city centres. There will also be integration between the different railways of Europe. This will bring further integration through technical harmonisation of various systems. Finally, integration with other modes of transport will optimise the role of high-speed rail in the overall journey. This paper was presented at the EURAILSPEED 92 conference held in Brussels, April 27-29, 1992. For the covering abstract see IRRD 853180.
