Abstract
Concern is expressed about the number of different electrification, train control and signalling systems which exist, and are continuing to be developed, on the European railways. A rolling master plan is suggested that will ensure that in 20 years the number of different systems decreases. The political will to achieve this is being manifested in the Community directive on interoperability. Also required, it is suggested, is technological progress. Developments are described which will aid harmonisation including a trend towards asynchronous three-phase traction and dual-current solutions and the higher power demands of high-speed running. In the train control and signalling sector digital technology, optic fibres, information technology and telematics present opportunities for progress on a united front.
