Abstract
Intelligent vehicle highways systems (IVHS) involve the use of computer, communications, and positioning and automation technologies to improve the efficiency of surface transportation. IVHS encompasses several interrelated areas of application: advanced traffic management systems; advanced traveler information systems; advanced public transportation systems; commercial vehicle operations; advanced vehicle control systems; and advanced rural transportation systems. Each of these areas is briefly discussed. Originally designed for efficiently using the full capacity of urban roadway systems to address the problems of traffic congestion, enhance safety, and reduce the environmental consequences of motor vehicles, today IVHS encompasses public transit and rural applications as well. It is also considered a means of enabling intermodalism. The future of IVHS will depend on the cooperation of the public and private sectors.
