Abstract

The article reviews the Phase 1 of California's Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) universal fare card system that was launched in February. This initial phase of the program is the seed of a larger plan to eventually link all 21 transit providers in the Bay area. 4,300 phase I cards, issued to volunteers who frequently use public transit, link routes and stations on six of the region's largest transit providers. MTC is planning further testing of the initial six systems and is looking forward to implementing phase II of the program and beyond. Despite the TransLink system's array of high technology bells and whistles, MTC sees the program as a customer service project primarily, and not a technology program.
