Abstract

This article focuses on TransLink, a smart card electronic fare payment system currently operational in a pilot program in six transit systems in the San Francisco Bay Area. TransLink features a single card that offers easy uses and interoperability to patrons, while providing a back-end financial clearinghouse and depot maintenance to the operators. The program is managed by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) which functions as the San Francisco Bay region's metropolitan planning organization.
