Abstract

This article gives an overview of three regional smart card programs in California: the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego regions. It first profiles the TransLink regional fare collection program established by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and San Francisco Bay Area transit agencies. The second system is the Universal Fare System (UFS) regional fare collection program for multi-modal public transit introduced by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) and several municipal operators in Los Angeles County. The third system described is the Automatic Fare Collection System being established by the Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB), the North County Transit District (NTCD), and the San Diego Transit Corporation. It will involve San Diego Trolley, Inc. (SDTI) and the suburban operators, including all buses, light rail, and commuter rail systems in the region.
