Abstract

About two years ago, the Road Commission for Oakland County, Michigan began deployment of the FAST-TRAC IVHS Project, comprised of both Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) and Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) technologies. This paper reviews the evolution of this Project and shares some of the lessons which were learned during the actual implementation process. Perhaps the most important lesson learned is that a local government highway agency, working cooperatively with other governmental entities including the State Department of Transportation, FHWA, and appropriate units of local government and, with the assistance of qualified and committed private sector participants, can effectively and successfully plan, implement and manage an IVHS Project.
