Abstract
A great number of ballastless track applications can be found in tunnels. These ballastless tracks, built during the past three decades, were mainly laid in new or short tunnels and in high-speed line applications. However, on Austrian Federal Railways (OBB) more than 10 km of ballastless track has been installed in two existing long tunnels. This article looks at the ballstless track in the Tauern tunnel, a classical summit and base tunnel running through the Alps with a total length of 8,550 m. The construction of the tunnel was completed in 1909.
