Hume highway - 1980

An 'inventory' type survey of the national highway route from Sydney to Melbourne (via the hume highway) has shown that major works are under way for the provision of divided highway for most of the length from Sydney to the federal highway, 13 km south of Goulburn (211 km). A large percentage of the NSW length of the route south of the federal highway (360 km) is currently unaffected by roadworks, and is substandard. Current roadworks will result in divided highway for 12% of the NSW length south of the federal highway. The existing road is basically two lanes wide, constructed on a substandard alignment, and is regularly in poor condition. A number of sections have adverse crash histories. In Victoria, current construction will result in divided highway for 47% of the distance. The remainder is basically two lanes wide, but constructed on an adequate alignment, and is in fair to good condition. (A)
