Illawarra highway 1978

An nrma survey team carried out an 'inventory' survey of the illawarra highway on 23rd February, 1978. The highway forms an important link between the hume and princes highway south of wollongong. The results of the survey have been compared with a similar survey carried out in 1974. The association believes that the highway should be at least two lanes and 7.4M wide and on a much improved alignment. With the high percentage (up to 40%) of heavy commercial vehicles using the highway it is considered that a number of slow vehicle lanes are required to provide improved overtaking opportunities. The survey has shown that significant improvements have been implemented between sutton forest and the hume highway. New construction on an improved alignment has eliminated several old and narrow bridges. The condition of the highway was better than in 1974 however, several poor areas remain. Curve warning signs with advisory speed signs have been erected throughout the highway and have in particular assisted motorists through macquarie pass.
