THERE'S NO STOPPING RAIL PROGRESS IN HONG KONG

This article reports on the continual development of the railway network in Hong Kong; it includes a map of existing and planned future lines. In Hong Kong's Special Administration Region (SAR) and in mainland China, there is a clear reduction of both private and public investment in railways, but a continued high investment in rail projects. In its Second Rail Development Strategy document, the Hong Kong Government has announced plans for at least ten new rail links that could be developed during the next 15 years. These schemes include: (1) a mass transit railway (MTR) from Hong Kong Island, across the western approaches to the harbour, to Lantau Island and Tuen Nun; (2) a spur from the Airport Railway and Tung Chung line to the proposed Disney Park at Penny's Bay; (3) a rail link from Central to Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island; (4) a fourth cross-harbour tunnel to North Point; and (5) a railway along the north shore of Hong Kong Island. The article describes the rail projects being developed by West Rail, NTRC, and KCRC, together with the East Rail Extension, the Fourth Rail Harbour Crossing (FHC), and a possible rail link between East Rail and West Rail through the northern part of the New Territories (NT).
