MTR Digs Deep in Hong Kong

Abstract

Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation currently operates all rail service in Hong Kong. MTR is set to enter a period of expansion, 30 years after it began operating its first subway line. MTR Corporation projects are discussed, including two scheduled to be completed this year: the 3.3 km long Tseung Kwan O - Lohas Park branch, and the 3 km Sheung Wan - Kennedy Town Island Line western extension. MTR's HK$50 billion Express Rail Link, which will run entirely in a 30 km tunnel, is examined. An insert provides detail on planned Hong Kong railway projects.
