Abstract
In the context of European railways Czechoslovakia is at an important point for transit between countries. However most lines are unsuitable for speeds over 100kph and many are single track. The results of research carried out showed that high-speed lines would be most beneficial but were too expensive. Two options for upgrading the present system were therefore identified - rehabilitation of lines to their standard condition or increase of track speed to 160kph. Because of the terrain the latter would require the construction of many new sections. A compromise was therefore agreed which involves giving priority to work on routes connecting with neighbouring railway systems. The corridors chosen are listed. This paper was presented at the EURAILSPEED 92 conference held in Brussels, April 27-29, 1992. For the covering abstract see IRRD 853180.
