FROST ACTION ON ROAD 335, TEST SITE GAELVEN. OBSERVATIONS 1982-83

Abstract

With the intention of validating the frost susceptibility testing apparatus constructed at VTI, a test site on a paved road in northern Sweden was instrumented so that the frost heave governing parameters could be measured. The measuring and calculations indicate that the ice formed in the underground soils is porous i.e. air is confined in the ice. Frost heaving parameters, received from laboratory freezing with the apparatus mentioned, were used in a frost heave predicting programme designed for the laboratory method used. The frost heave calculated from this agrees well with observations from the test site. However, the frost depth is about 10% too short. (TRRL)
