THE THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES CARRIED OUT BETWEEN 1963 AND 1965 IN THE USSR ARE REVIEWED. MAIN RESEARCH RESULTS AND PREVIOUS OBSERVATIONS ARE DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING THE CALCULATION OF FACTORS TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR PROTECTING PAVEMENTS FROM FROST: RATE OF WATER ABSORPTION, FLOW ROUTES, FROST PROPAGATION RATE, SWELLING AND FROST HEAVE, DEPTH OF FROST PENETRATION, DRAINAGE, ETC..
