Abstract
Truck-only lanes can be an effective method of reducing traffic congestion, improving mobility, and increasing traffic safety. With commercial truck travel expected to increase by 49% by 2020, urban traffic congestion will worsen and traffic safety will be further impacted, especially as research finds that traffic accidents involving large trucks cause one out of eight traffic fatalities. This article cites a few examples of how some states are studying methods of expanding or building truck-only lanes in heavily-trafficked areas as a means of reducing gridlock.
