Abstract
This article describes new developments in Electronic Toll and Traffic Management technology (ETTM). Brief details are provided of the way this technology is being used to enhance highway efficiency, reduce toll collection costs, and increase traffic throughput. The effect of recent United States legislation upon research and development of ETTM technology is discussed briefly. The potential for using ETTM technology in the new congestion pricing programme is also discussed briefly. The status of the International Bridge and Tunnel Association's research and study programme is also presented. An example of an ETTM system, the Telepass system, is also provided.
