Abstract
Information for passengers is becoming increasingly important to maximise the effectiveness of public transport. This paper describes the planning for a real time passenger information system for buses in Perth. The proposal promotes progression of an isolated system to become part of an integrated passenger information system with a transport information centre. The planning is based on extensive experience by many operators in diverse locations and the requirements of individual cities. The background was used to develop a concept for a practical system for implementation by system providers. The specific components are described including the proposed positioning system for vehicle location, the communications systems, the central information system as well as the form and content of information provided at the bus stops and on board the vehicles.
