Abstract

Class one railroads in the United States are currently experiencing a revival of growth. Train technology has improved to become more energy-efficient, and train use has grown in terms of both passengers and freight, with growth expected to continue. It is necessary to maintain rail infrastructure to keep up with the growth the industry is experiencing. The demand for trains is greater than the capacity of the rail lines, which causes delays. It is necessary for many railroads to build additional tracks. Recently, a second track was added to the Los Angeles-to-San Diego line in Carlsbad, California. The project improved the capacity and reliability of passenger train service. There are similar projects being developed around the United States. Adding additional tracks has been shown to be a highly successful solution to capacity problems.
