Abstract
Pedestrians are an important group of road users in urban areas and should be taken into account in the design and performance analysis of signalized intersections. The majority of current methods for evaluating signalized intersection performance include the pedestrian impact, but only a few methods provide for the possibility of pedestrian delay estimation and do so in a rough way neglecting their true behavior. The paper presents the results of pedestrian behavior studies which enable one to point out the factors influencing pedestrian delays at signalized intersections. The predictive formula for the proportion of pedestrian movements in a vehicle phase is presented. In the next part of the paper, a model of pedestrian effect on capacity of turning vehicle movements is described as well as its calibration based on field measurements. The values given in this model are compared with those from the Highway Capacity Manual method.
