This article describes Trailmaster, the freeway management system (FMS) in operation in the Phoenix area in Arizona. The system includes CCTV, variable message signs, loop detectors, and variable message signs. Trailmaster was selected in Fall 1996 as one of the U.S. DOT's sites for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) model deployment.
