Abstract
This article describes how AZTech (Arizona Tech), a coalition of local and regional agencies, has developed an exemplary traffic management system for the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area. Beginning in 1998 with a $7.5 million Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) grant, AZTech developed an advanced travel information system (ATIS) with a website that receives 10 million hits per month; a freeway management system that relies on more than 500 loop detectors buried beneath roadways in and around Phoenix; an incident management system; and an arterial management system that uses dynamic message signage, CCTV cameras, and traffic detection devices. A SparcCenter 2000 information processor collects data from regional partners and transmits it to travelers. In the future, an ATIS project will provide real-time, pre-trip travel time information on LCD displays.
