Abstract
The author defines road design in horizontal and vertical alignment, and describes the preliminary feasibility and final design stages. The main costs in road design (construction costs, vehicle-operating costs, design and administrative costs, maintenance costs and social costs) are listed and their modelling for computerized design is outlined. Constraints to be taken into account in road design: geometric design standards, phasing restrictions, level and passage controls are given together with several basic techniques which have been tried for optimizing road alignments. A brief description is given of programs used to optimize vertical and horizontal alignments in the USA, France, Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom (TRRL and University of London programs).
