Abstract
Two sets of programs, the BIPS (to translate the design effort from the drawing board to the ground) 1 and 2, and the HOPS (to minimise the constructional costs of such roads) are described and the suitability or otherwise of these programs is reported. BIPS 1 and 2 offer programs related to horizontal and vertical alignment, ground information, superelevation, road cross-section, full cross-section, and earthwork quantities. The horizontal and vertical alignment programs are flexible, easy to use, and present results in a very readable and acceptable manner. However, other programs require simplifications and modifications. With regard to the HOPS suite of programs, only the PRELUDE (ground simplification program) and the MINERVA (the optimising program) are discussed. Aspects of the programs that have presented problems are discussed.
