THE TRAC PROGRAMME IN SOUTH AFRICA

Abstract

The Transportation and Civil Engineering Program (TRAC) is an informational and training effort designed to educate students in grades 9-12 about career opportunities in transportation and civil engineering. TRAC, developed by AASHTO, the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, and other affiliated entities, has been operating in South Africa since 1994 as an extended U.S. regional center. An initial investigation of participating schools found that several factors were hindering the effective implementation of TRAC in South Africa. This paper looks at the effectiveness of TRAC in meeting stakeholder needs and goals, and also discusses the enhancement of TRAC activities for South African conditions.
