TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT WITH REAL-TIME GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM AND HIGH-SPEED COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK

Abstract

The United States and the rest of the world are paying an unacceptable price in congestion delay costs. Studies have shown that an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) will improve the flow of traffic, provide immediate emergency response, decrease delays, decrease accidents, and provide immediate management response to any freeway incident. Through merging the technology of video, voice and field data elements, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), over a single communication backbone, an ATMS system will help respond to incident management in a real-time environment by informing emergency services and helping restore roadway to full service. GDS Corporation of Englewood, Colorado has already participated in the development of a number of traffic management systems at these locations: Georgia Advanced Transportation Management System in Atlanta, New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Caltrans EPI Center, Houston TranStar. The product is called the gdsATMS-TOC solution. The gdsATMS-TOC solution is a tool used in most traffic management strategies that included a real-time GIS.
