Abstract
Mott MacDonald is responsible for the structural, ventilation, aerodynamics and fire life safety of the new tunnels in the construction of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, UK. These consist of rail, road, wastewater and passenger transfer tunnels including the 1.2km Piccadilly Line extension, Heathrow Express extension, Storm Water Outfall tunnel and the Airside Road Tunnel. Designs include tunnels lined with expanded precast conaete, twin bored tunnels, and cut-and-cover designs. The main types of work being undertaken are general civil engineering for cut-and-cover tunnels at east and west portals, bulk excavation in cut-and-cover, service diversions, ground treatment, construction of bored tunnels using tunnel boring machines, construction of cross passages and the installation of mechanical and electrical systems.
