Abstract
It's granted that the settlement at the middle part of an embankment is more than that on the two sides. So the measuring points for settlement are usually imbedded at the middle of an embankment as required by specifications . This paper simulates the settlement patterns of a broad embankment built on soft foundation by FEM program applying elastic model coupling Biot theory. It's concluded that the settlement on two sides of the embankment is more than that at the middle part, and the location of the maximum settlement moves toward to the middle part as the increase of embankment height. This simulation results are in accordance with the measuring results of Muar test embankments in Malaysia. The in-situ measured settlement of the foundation of Shenzhen airport also showed that the settlement at the two edges of the foundation was larger than that at the middle part of the foundation.
