Abstract

The construction of the E40-E25 twin-tunnel motorway link below the Cointe Hill in Liege, Belgium, proved to be a complicated but successful undertaking. Not only is the hill the site of ancient and unrecorded coal mining, but the area is covered by houses and crossed by an important railway line, factors which placed a heavy responsibility on the shoulders of both the designers and the contractors.
