Abstract

Twin tunnels linking the E40 and E25 motorways in Liege, Belgium will be 1260m and 1356m in length, 14m in diameter, 30-45m apart and linked every 180m by 5m service galleries. Each tunnel will carry three 3.5m wide lanes, fresh air will be pumped through under-road ducting and exhaust fumes extracted through the roof of the tunnel. Details are given of the geology of the area which includes an extensive network of mineshafts. Excavation is being carried out using a roadheader with a pilot tunnel first being driven at the crown. The reasons for the excavation method chosen are discussed. The use of deformation monitors to determine support methods and the use of 3 or 4.5m long Super- Swellex rock bolts are outlined. Ground improvement in the vicinity of mine workings is described. The tunnel lining used consists of 300mm shotcrete and 300mm pre-formed concrete.
