Abstract
A new I-40 connector in North Carolina linking the port city of Wilmington with the capital city of Raleigh is being constructed. The first 27-mile section of I-40 from Raleigh to Benson is being constructed of portland cement concrete, and the 92-mile stretch from Benson to Wilmington will be entirely of asphalt (full-depth asphalt, and asphalt concrete on aggregate base course). The decision to use asphalt concrete was prompted by lower initial construction costs and concern over settlement in the swampy lowlands around Wilmington. The land has a very low California bearing ratio and sandy ridges. Sinkholes are also present in the area. Drainage was also a problem. Construction details designed to overcome these problems are described.
