Abstract
The article describes the challenges faced by a Colorado company when it overlayed a 25.5 mile stretch of Highway 149 south of Gunnison, Colorado, in the Rocky Mountains. The winding, two lane highway, complete with blind corners, was kept open for traffic during paving by using a pilot car to lead traffic from one end of construction to the other. The high elevation caused difficulties because of afternoon rainstorms and cool morning temperatures. Paving could only take place when it was dry and above 40 degrees. Details of the construction project, which included a one-inch leveling course of asphalt with a two-inch overlay of asphalt cement, are included.
