Abstract

The paper presents the main European projects in the field of train protection, with the aim of achieving technical harmonisation of the European railways. Great diversity of railway technical systems in Europe results from the fact that three track gauges are used, several systems of electric traction, numerous different signalling and safety devices, and all this causes trains to have to stop at the interface points of different technical systems. The founding of the European Union eliminated the political borders, and by standardisation and harmonisation of railway systems UIC (Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer) is trying to eliminate technical borders as well.
