Abstract
In this paper, the author discusses the adoption of automated toll collection technologies in Puerto Rico, from an American perspective. Background information on Puerto Rico is first given, with focus on toll roads. The technology behind automated toll collection is discussed and categorized into three sections: automatic vehicle identification, automatic vehicle classification, and violation enforcement systems. This is followed by a look at the potential advantages of automated toll collection. An examination of the various associated issues is presented. These include: technological, legislative, enforcement, design, interoperability applications, and potential.
