Abstract
This study reviews the available electronic toll collection technologies, compares various functional designs, system implementation issues for automatic toll collection, and potential traffic management activities. This study effort was to investigate various design issues and characterize available Automatic Vehicle Identification ( AVI ) designs for effective Electronic Toll Collection ( ETC ) and Automatic Traffic Management ( ATM ). This paper documents up-to-date applications of various AVI/TOLL systems technologies, their potential operational efficiency, alternative system designs, and extended system capabilities for improved and sustainable toll collection operations.
