Abstract

This study was undertaken to provide initial action planning-related analysis of the London Road Traffic Noise Map, including advice on the options for the use of traffic noise barriers in Greater London. This work will enable transport authorities in London to consider and plan what type of barrier can be used for different circumstances. The report initially provides a brief overview on the theoretical aspect of noise barrier performance and then examines different barrier options available. This considers different barrier types, including full and partial covers, claddings, vegetative and median barriers. Also included in the report are the potential uses of photovoltaic barrier and the use of re-cycled materials. Photovoltaic (PV) surfaces can be incorporated into noise barriers in order to optimise the gains of both electricity generation and additional screening and these are also considered. The report concludes with a discussion on the cost effectiveness and the situations in which barrier types are most effective in providing noise mitigation.
