Abstract
This paper discusses the use of roadside barriers to reduce the levels of traffic noise in nearby communities. It also discusses the need for barriers on both sides of a highway, the resulting degradation of barrier performance, and the need to incorporate sound-absorbing facings into barrier designs. In addition, it includes a general overview of sound-absorbing materials and an extensive catalog of suitable materials and systems as well as some popular misconceptions for reducing highway noise.
