Abstract
The principal mode of transportation in India is rail transport. The second largest railway network in the world, Indian Railways has nearly 69,000 km of rail and 7000 stations. In order to continue to provide safe and efficient service, Indian Railways has embarked on an ambitious plan to modernise and upgrade signalling. Improvements and additional signalling projects include: distant signals for trains operating at 120 km or more; track circuits at all stations where trains run at 75 km or more; train activated safety devices at grade crossings; automatic train control systems for safety, advanced warnings and radio communications, and train management systems to provide passenger information.
