Abstract
Though communications-based train control (CBTC) is being developed independently by several different vendors for several different lines, the system is being hailed as the next big thing for railroads. Also known as positive train control (PTC) and advanced automatic train control (AATC), the system monitors trains and can remotely control route and speed, reducing the potential for collisions, accidents, and other unplanned incidents. Some transit agencies hope to have the system in place as early as late 2002.
