Abstract

Even well controlled sand fills show significant density variation to the extent that a question arises as to what density characterizes the overall response of the fill to load. The determination of the in-situ state probability density function is a first step in such a characterization. A method to do this using cone penetration test (CPT) data is described. The method makes no prior assumption about the nature of the distribution function but does require a minimum number of CPT soundings. It appears that at least 12 soundings are required for statistically meaningful results.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828222.
